The Perils of Pat and Barb--Chapter 1 October 18, 2010

The Adventures and Perils of Barb and Patti. This version is fiction based on a true life experience. Once upon a time there were two cousins, Barb and Patti, who loved to hike, even though they were at an age where they should have been home knitting or something. One day they ventured to East Fork State Park for a short hike before lunch.

They decided since it was only a short walk, they only took a bottle of water each with them. They had made plans to come back in an hour to eat a salad to kick off their diet contest. It was a beautiful autumn day. The trail was an easy one at first, except for the little ravine they had to walk up.

Barb handed Patti a limb and helped to pull her up and then they walked on and on. They came to a grape vine and Barb, the older cousin, decided to swing from it, but it broke, throwing her on the ground. Amidst laughter, they continued on. They found a safer grapevine and took a picture.

They continued on, and soon they were lost, having forgotten their map and compass. They walked AND walked; the trail turning into a steep and endless winding tangle of brush. They wondered where the paint on the trees had gone that was guiding them.

(The trail ended at this cliff.)

They were just following a path to: "Oh, no." The path ended up at a cliff with a creek at the bottom. They decided they had better go back and find a tree with the blue color on it.

Patti was tired, so she decided to take a shortcut and jump off the cliff.

Barb thought she was dead and prayed for someone to rescue them.

Barb continued on a trail to get down to Pat who was lying in a dry creek bed.

Then a kindly woodsman, named Dave, appeared from over the ridge. At first they were apprehensive. He had a walking stick and a backpack on.

(Dave, the woodsman)

He also had an axe hooked to his backpack. But, he seemed friendly and they really wanted to get out of the woods. He suggested that they go down by the lake and hail down someone in a fishing boat to motor them back over to Reisinger dock, but they did not find anyone near enough with a boat.

Dave offered them food, water, and a map and saved their lives by leading them safely out of the forest where they came upon a small black topped access road. Barb called her husband, Jim, and he came and picked them up many miles from their home.   Patti was so tired we had to help her over the access road gate.

Their one hour walk   turned into a 5 1/2 hour trek.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Well, almost happily ever after until their next adventure. Who knows what they will do next? I guess it’s Patti's choice next month to pick an adventure. I am sure Patti's pick won't get them into any trouble, I think. Stay tuned to this Face Book page and watch the events in the life of Barb and Patti, two silly cousins.----The END

Chapter 2 Perils of Pat and Barb

Chapter 2 Perils of Pat & Barb. November 1, 2010.  The saga fiction continues. I am just learning how to blog.  When I get it perfected I will write chapter 1 here.  Right now it is still on Face book.

It was a nice, not too cool day, in the high 60’s.  Pat chose Rowe Nature Center as our November outing.  Everything started off good, so we were confident we would not have any perils today.

We decided on a short trail first around the lake.

Almost the first thing we saw was a grapevine.  Now the last time Barb tried to swing from a grapevine, it broke and she landed on her rear end amidst much laughter.  She sat on this new one and it held.

Pat, being cautious, wrapped her arm first, before she fell.  It must have been a good jinx, because she did not fall this time.

The only wildlife we saw all day were some ducks, a squirrel, birds, and a school of fish in the lake. They were studying on how to not get hooked.

All the frogs were gone from the lily pad pond.

We found an old tent that was pitched.  Pat decided to go see if we could camp out there, but the ground was too hard and we did not bring our sleeping bags, but we did have our map this time.

After the very short trail, called the Edge Trail, marked green on the map, was only .6 mile.

We sat and thought what we could do next.  Since we made the first trail in very little time, we wandered around to see what next our imagination could get us into.

We found a recycling bin which was kind of cool.  We took a picture of it so that we could make one for ourselves.

Patti found some old bones.

Barb found a hornet’s nest.  We were thinking it was vacated already, but Pat was sure some hornets would come out and attack us.  All at once we heard a buzzing sound.  We ran as fast as we could down the hill and avoided the hornets.

We chose to walk the Geology Trail which was 1.2 miles. It was marked purple on our map.

It had some hills and a set of long steps down to the flat area.  After a time, we had to climb back up the hill,

but first Barb saw a log lying across the ravine and had to try it out.

It was very difficult to climb back up the hill.

Pat saw something that looked like an anthill.  It was only a tree that had fallen.  We had a laugh over that.

All of a sudden lightning came out of the West and split a tree.

It fell before our eyes.  We ran so fast, but not before we took a picture.

Barb’s knee started hurting so she wrapped it up.

We found a gazebo shelter house.

Pat took a nap because her foot started hurting from the long trek uphill.

Barb crawled into a cave.  Patti rescued her from the spiders and we went down a very long stairway.

We saw a man coming up, pulling his two small children with him. We thought the kids were tired, because the man was distracting them by counting the steps.  As they came past us, they were on number 90 and still counting as they passed us by.  We were glad we were going down and not up them.

As we continued down the stairs, a picture of Pat was taken as she slowly came down, being careful to not hurt her foot. She was going much slower than Barb who had practically run down the steps.  As the camera shutter opened, right before her eyes, Barb saw a ghostly figure. She hollered up to Pat that she would not believe what had been captured on the camera.  It looked like the spirit of Pat’s late husband, Eddie.

We found a creek that had some water in it with large rocks across it.  As Pat crossed, the big rock moved.  It sounded like she had dropped something. We both safely made it across the water without any mishaps.

We saw a tree with hips built right in which reminded us that we should stay on our diet.

We saw a log with mushrooms on.  Patti told Barb they were not on our diet for today.

Also, we saw a big rock in the creek with fossils on it.

We both had been experiencing stress in our lives, so this outing was good for us.

We did a lot of laughing together.

Today ended the October diet contest.  Barb won by one pound.  In November, we will see who will be the lucky one.  Oh, no!  Thanksgiving is at the end of the month.  Will we be able to resist?  Stay tuned to this blog page to see who will win in November.

My prize for winning the October diet contest was a perennial from Patti’s yard.  We both could not think of the name of it, but it has been planted in Barb's flower bed.

Patti and Barb went and celebrated their birthdays.  Barb's is November 13 and Pat’s December 15, but we always pick a day and celebrate together most years. We have been celebrating birthdays together since 2002. We exchange gifts and have a meal together.  This year we ate at Red Lobster.  Yummy!

We both had the same entree.  Fire Grilled shrimp, scallops, and chicken.

BarbPatti

This is the first year for the “Perils of Pat and Barb.”  We both have wild imaginations.

We thought we were writing in the future, because when I saw the date on the pics, it was the year 2235.  I could not get my camera to reset the correct date.  Just something else to try and figure out.

Our next adventure will be to ride around and take pictures of old barns.  Patti has a neat plan with the pictures.  Later we will tell you about that.
Love,  Patti and Barb, the silly cousins.
